** Central Market visit, emblematic plaza´s & Wine Tasting Lunch **

We start the day with a visit to the Mercado Central, Valencia´s unique Central Market.

mercado-central-market-valenciaThe enormous Modernista concoction was designed by Alejandro Soler & Francisco Guardia and was completed in 1928 comprising of wrought iron and stained glass surmounted with cupolas and elaborate weathervanes. Whilst the building is impressive it is the sheer array of fresh fruit, vegetables, fish and all manner of local produce that is quite astounding inside the market. Beneath the central glass dome over 1000 stalls offer their delicacies fresh from the huerta of Valencia, many sellers specialising in particular foods. The range of cheeses, hams, cured meats & wines from all over Spain are also on sale with some selling snack style samples of foods and wine. A separate Pescado hall of  gleaming fresh fish is unsurpassable with varietes of prawn, lobster, cuttlefish, octopus and various fishes.  Foodies will definitely enjoy walking the market and perhaps treat yourself to some  local delights.

After our market visit we stroll through the Plaza Redonda to the Plaza de la Reina, a most beautiful plaza housing the Miguelette Bell Tower & the Church of Santa Catalina. We stop here for morning coffee/hot chocolate  & churros or perhaps Valencia´s refreshing summer drink "Orchata".

Orchata dates back to the " Moors" and is made with tigernuts grown in Alboraya on the edge of the city, a DOP product of Valencia. This is accompanied with fartons, the local sweet bread fingers.

We pass/visit the Palacio de Dos Aguas through to the Plaza Ayuntamiento, the largest plaza housing the town hall, Correos & a range of other emblematic buildings on route to the Plaza de Toros (bull ring) & the Modernista Estacion del Norte railway station  completed in 1917.
